From Washington to Your Workplace: What this Administration Could Mean to You
Business High Point, Inc. and the High Point Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Outlook Forum is more than just a forecast. This event will provide our members with up-to-date information about the economy through an overview of economic trends and opportunities important to our community.
The event panel guests features: John Jung, BB&T’s Senior Managing Director and Head of BB&T Capital Markets; Lynn Douthett, District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration's North Carolina Office; Professor Kathryn Elliott, HPU’s Assistant Professor of the Practice of Entrepreneurship and Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship; and Professor Peter Summers, HPU’s Assistant Professor of Economics. The event will be moderated by Professor Daniel Hall, HPU’s Chair of the Department of Economics and Assistant Professor of Economics.
About the Panelists:
Professor Daniel Hall, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Economics, Assistant Professor of Economics at High Point University
Dr. Daniel Hall joined HPU in 2010 as the Assistant Professor of Economics; he also serves as Chair of the Department of Economics for the Earl N. Phillips School of Business (PSB). Dr. Hall teaches microeconomics and environmental economics and is a contributing member of the Phillips School of Business Leadership Team. He represents the school of business on the Academic Planning and Intercollegiate Review Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the University Research Committee. He serves HPU and community at large as the advisor to the Civitan Club on campus, a group known for the good works and civic duties. The Civitan Club has won many awards for service and Dr. Hall was awarded Outstanding Faculty Advisor by his students. Dr. Hall also incorporates Civitan into his research and into his teaching of a service learning course in microeconomics. He was honored as Service Learning Professor of the Year for the 2013-2014 academic year. Dr. Hall has three current peer reviewed publications dealing with the crowding out of contributions voluntary public goods provision trust under different property right entitlements in the journal Games, the efficiency-equality tradeoff in the “Charity with Choice” issue of Research in Experimental Economics, and how the alternative of government provision may crowd out voluntary provision of public goods in Libertarian Papers. He has several research projects in progress and presents regularly at the Association of Private Enterprise Education Conference, the Southern Economic Association Conference, and the Economic Science Association Conference. Dr. Hall earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics at Georgia State University and his B.S. in Economics at Georgia State College and State University.
Lynn Douthett
District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s North Carolina Office
Lynn Douthett was appointed District Director of the US Small Business Administration's North Carolina District Office in June 2010. She oversees a staff of 15 employees and the delivery of agency programs such as financial assistance, management counseling and business development throughout the state of North Carolina, including three alternate worksite areas (Asheville, Raleigh and Wilmington). Lynn joined SBA in 1998. She managed the SBA's National Call Center in Charlotte, NC and moved to South Florida as the Assistant District Director for Marketing and Outreach. Shortly after returning to North Carolina in 2003, she was named Deputy District Director. Prior to joining SBA, Lynn worked for 15 years in the banking industry as a regional manager with several banks completing her career with BB&T. As a small business owner she established and marketed her own company in Charlotte, NC. The business provided specialty-painting services for commercial and residential clients. Lynn is a graduate of University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She has pursued graduate studies in finance at Fairfield University in Connecticut and at Queens University in North Carolina, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill –School of Government – Economic Development and the Harvard Business School Alumni – Management Development Program in Charlotte, NC.
Professor Kathryn Elliott
Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at High Point University
Kathryn Elliott joined the Earl N. Phillips School of Business (PSB) in August of 2014 as Assistant Professor of the Practice of Entrepreneurship and the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship. At HPU, Ms. Elliott teaches Entrepreneurial Creativity and Feasibility; Family Business Management; Business Modeling, Planning, Strategy, and Growth; and Social Entrepreneurship. Ms. Elliott came to HPU with extensive experience working with business development organizations, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. Her widespread and comprehensive network of business contacts is extremely beneficial to the PSB entrepreneurship students. Most recently, Ms. Elliott has worked as Entrepreneur Connection Vice President for the Greensboro Partnership to develop high-growth entrepreneurial businesses. Prior to that, she spent 17 years with the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce rising to the level of Vice President of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. As Director, Ms. Elliott manages the HPU Center for Entrepreneurship and leads its program activities, providing the leadership and vision to develop an inclusive entrepreneurship center while supporting the dynamic teachings offered through High Point University. She cultivates student entrepreneurs and encourages faculty involvement across the university. She also develops and promotes entrepreneurship opportunities, recruits mentors, and performs community outreach. Kathy Elliott earned a Master of Entrepreneurship at Western Carolina University. She also earned a B.S. in Human Resources Management from Excelsior College and a BBA in Business Management from Lamar University. She served the United States as a Radioman in the U.S. Navy for five years before entering undergraduate school.
John Jung, MBA
Senior Managing Director, Head of BB&T Capital Markets at BB&T
Mr. Jung is Senior Managing Director and Head of BB&T Capital Markets, a division of BB&T Securities, LLC. With 30+ years of experience, Mr. Jung is responsible for leading the firm’s debt and equity capital markets activities, and has been focused on the successful integration between BB&T’s capital markets securities business and BB&T’s corporate bank. In addition, he is a member of BB&T’s Senior Leadership Team and serves on several boards including BB&T Securities LLC., Sterling Capital Management LLC and The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Jung is an experienced speaker on issues that affect today’s companies and the economy, sharing his wealth of knowledge and common sense virtues with audiences all over BB&T’s vast footprint. Mr. Jung joined BB&T Capital Markets in 1997 through its acquisition of Craigie Incorporated. Mr. Jung holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Virginia.
Professor Peter Summers, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Economics at High Point University
Dr. Peter Summers came to HPU in 2011 as the Assistant Professor of Economics, after working in Texas, Kansas, and Australia! He served as Assistant Professor of Economics at Texas Tech University and as a visiting scholar for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Prior to those appointments, he worked in Australia at the Melbourne Institute of the University of Melbourne, most recently as Associate Professor and Head of Macroeconomic Research. During his time in Australia he also served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Adelaide. His research interests include empirical macroeconomics, business cycles, time series econometrics, Bayesian econometrics, forecasting, and economic indicators. His works have been published in the Journal of Economics, the B. E. Journal of Macroeconomics, Economic Review, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, and Economics Letters, among others. Some of the titles include: The Effect of Monetary Policy on Real Commodity Prices; Regime Switches in GDP Growth and Volatility; Labor Market Cycles and Business Cycles.At HPU he has taught principles of microeconomics, principles of macroeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, money and banking, and a first year seminar on financial crises. He serves on the Phillips School of Business Assurance of Learning Evaluation Committee and the First-Year Seminars Committee. Dr. Summers holds professional affiliations with the American Economic Association, the International Institute of Forecasters, and the Missouri Valley Economics Association. Dr. Summers earned his Ph.D. in Economics, his M.S. in Mathematics, his M.A. in Urban & Regional Planning, and his B.A. in Communications all at the University of Iowa.
