Reconstruction was a period of economic, social, and political ferment which often erupted into violence. With the abolition of slavery and the defeat of secessionists, how could the country be reconstituted and reunified? The stakes were exceedingly high. Lamar DeLoatch, founder of the local chapter of AAHGS, shares his thoughts.
