The Freedmen’s Bureau was set up to assist with postwar recovery in the defeated Southern states. It provided relief but also assisted newly manumitted slaves with labor, legal, educational, and family matters. A comprehensive indexing project has just been completed. Marcellaus Joiner will demonstrate the value of the records and explain how to search, interpret, and apply them to your research.
