    The City of High Point's Community Development and Housing Department seeks to fill a Local Code Enforcement Officer I position. Performs responsible technical work in interpreting and enforcing the City’s local codes ordinances – minimum housing, public nuisance, junked/abandoned vehicles, and zoning ordinances; does related work as required.

    Essential Tasks

    • Interprets, enforces and educates the public on the City’s Local Codes Ordinances
    • Deals with the public by receiving complaints and furnishing information pertaining to local codes – minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning ordinances
    • Investigates citizen complaints regarding possible minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicle and zoning violations by performing field inspections
    • Inspects development for compliance with any zoning and/or conditional use permit regulations prior to issuance of Certificates of Occupancy
    • Conducts systematic inspections of minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning violations
    • Issues required notices of violations in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes, High Point’s Code of Ordinances and Development Ordinance for minimum housing, public nuisance, junked vehicles and zoning ordinance
    • Takes necessary corrective action for securing voluntary compliance for local codes that are enforced by this division
    • Issues civil penalties for violations not corrected
    • Coordinates towing of junked/abandoned vehicles when compliance is not obtained
    • Maintain daily records of all activities performed in Accela database
    • Ensures that all work performed is in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies


    • Formal Education
      • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
      • Training and experience in code enforcement in the areas of construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical or zoning is desirable
    • Thorough understanding of local, state and federal safety regulations and OSHA
    • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Level I Certification or higher in building, plumbing, mechanical or electrical issued by NC State Code Qualifications Board; or
    • Housing Code Certification issued by North Carolina Association of Housing Code Officials; or
    • Certified Zoning Official Certification issued by North Carolina Association of Zoning Officials

    Salary: $37,673.36+ Depending on qualifications Annually. with benefits
